AFRICAN DOPE SOUNDSYSTEM

The African Dope Soundsystem is a tight collaboration of Capetonian dub, reggae and dancehall DJs, MCs, live and electronic musicians, studio producers and video artists.

Every member of the soundsystem is at the top of their respective field in the South African music industry, making the African Dope Soundsystem an ALL-STAR lineup…

The sound is a fresh hybrid of local and international styles, ranging from dub reggae through to electronic dancehall, all songs featuring original African vocals, tight beats, accoustic musicians, electronic soundscapes and deadly subbass riddims.

some background      meet the crew

The African Dope Soundsystem started out as a studio collaboration ... top local producers DJ DOPE and JUAN THYME were busy creating a nu supa-phat african dub sound, mostly in the early hours of the morning. While the rest of the city slept, the bassbins in the backroom studio at AFRICAN DOPE RECORDS could be heard groaning under the subbass preshhure…

Having heard demos from hundreds of local artists, DJ DOPE knew exactly who to speak to when it came to dropping vocalz for the project.

THE CHRONIC CLAN were top of the list of local dancehall artists, and collaborations with RED LION had already been released on the African Dope hip hop and dancehall compilation, “Cape of Good Dope”.

Soon, the team was introduced to another local king of the dancehall, BLACK DILLINGER, whose powerful voice has been rocking parties across da ghetto, uptown and internationally.

TEBA walked into the studio one night and, after dropping a couple of his fresh dancehall tunes, instantly proved himself to be a powerful conscious voice on the mic and a deadly on the bass guitar.

After a trip to the May Day Concert in Langa township in Cape Town, DJ DOPE was blown away by young JJ, who rocked the crowd with his rudebwoy style and massive vocal hooks.

This teenager is by far the youngest member of the crew, but one of it’s liveliest characters.

The project wouldn’t be complete without the musical talents of South African guitar legend, TIM PARR, whose studio is next door to African Dope Records. Tim has donated literally thousands of hours of studio time to let the project develop, not to mention some wicked guitar lix!

JUAN THYME

JUAN THYME has been bending heads across the globe at festivals and at club parties for more than a decade (and still looks quite youthful for an old rocker).
Highly skilled on guitar, bass and percussion, his nu weapon of choice is ripping up the studio with Acid 4.0. and a deadly Virus…

He has rocked accousticly and electronicly with bands, dj’s and electronic producers, playing every style of music known to man (and some that are not) except Country & Western and Boy Band Cover Versions. Highlights of his international festival appearances include Glastonbury (UK), Rustlers Valley (SA), Solipse (Zambia), Reading Festival (UK), Flux Festival (SA) and the Millenium Vortex (SA). He was born in Basingstoke, England, but you shouldn’t hold that against him.

RED LION is 28 years old, born and bred in Mitchells Plein, Cape Town (centre of the infamous Cape Flats ganglands).

He is a killa ragga MC with a truly unique vocal tone, also rocking the desk as a sound engineer in his spare time.
His main musical influences are Jamaican-style reggae and hip hop in all its forms.

Mostly working as a solo artist these days, he has also collaborated in the past with the likes of Sons of Selassie, Lions of Zion, Amon China, DJ DOPE, EJ von Lyric, Bombshelter hi fi and JUAN THYME.

more       the adss crew

Red Lion is a self-confessed flirt who’s lazy in the kitchen and definitely prefers takeaways to cooking.

In the mornings, after a heavy dub session the night before, you’ll find him slumped over a bowl of chocolate Pronutro, or possibly cornflakes … definitely living in a cereal world.

Quote of the day:
“I am the Red Lion / One man battalion / Local International / Red Eyed Capetonian !!!”

BLACK DILLINGER is a fiery 22 year old rasta, born and bred in Gugulethu, Cape Town.

From growing up in a very musical environment, it was a natural step for him to pick up the mic and start toasting.

He started taking his singing seriously in about 1999, touring South African with local artist Sounds of Azania and international headliners such as Buju Banton, Dawit Menelik Tafari, Ras Ites, Cutlture and Winston Rodney, leading to a release on the Sound of Azania album “True Story”.

more       the adss crew

Lately he has been busy in the studio collaborating with Turbulence and the African Express Soundsystem, together with fellow Gugulethu locals, THE CHRONIC CLAN.

His mission is to spread the conscious music and message of Rastafari - the teachings of His Majesty Haile King Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia - highlighting the social circumstances of modern day life in Africa, exposing corruption and fighting for the rights of the poor.

JJ a.k.a. “the future” is a 16 year old youth from the Gugulethu ghetto, who started spreading his gospel of reggae and dancehall in 1999. Working in colaboration with the CHRONIC CLAN, he has been hyping the crowds at local dancehalls and reggae shows, never failing to get a jumping audience response.

Always popular with the girls, JJ was voted "most popular artist" by the contestants at the recent Miss Gugulethu beauty pagent after performing his massive single “Girl Sugar Plum.” This bright and friendly youth certainly has an exciting international musical career to look forward to (once he’s finished his homework, of course).

THE CONSTRUCTUS CORPORATION

The Constructus Corporation is another ingenious product from the mind of Waddy Jones - a futuristic story told in collaboration with some of SA's finest underground talents in music, words and graphics.

Waddy Jones is an enigmatic lyrical terrorist who has bent the form of hiphop into his own unique theatrical vision.

Always roleplaying, always mindbending, Waddy reached SA superstar status with his band Max Normal, then promptly disbanded the band because the stardom had become too creatively restrictive, and embarked on the Constructus adventure.

more

The result, 9 months later, is the mindboggling multimedia concept THE ZIGGURAT, an 88 page glossy hard cover book, with story handwritten by Waddy, comic art illustrations by Nikhil Singh, and of course the soundtrack cd.

On it, Waddy performs as a variety of characters, telling the story of adventures aboard the futureworld THE ZIGGURAT in rhymes and fables, over a heady mushup of hiphop and electronica the group call BOOMBAM, created by max normal collaborator SIBOT, MARKUS WORMSTORM, FELIX LABAND, and introducing vocals from ANICA THE SNUFLING.

more      back

Meanwhile, waddy continues to perform with max normal and a new band Fantastikill; is currently recording an electropop album under the name Emmanuel Rothchild for Chameleon Records; and writing the script for BLOOD NOSE PUSSYBOY, the dvd album he wrote THE ZIGGURAT as an advertisement for!

KRUSHED & SORTED

Krushed & Sorted are the dj/producer team who started and still run African Dope Records. since they combined record cases to become a dj crew in late 97, k&s have become a dominant force in the underground SA music industry, headlining most festivals and major music events and setting new standards for SA music production with their special brand of bassheavy phat beats in all styles and tempos from dub, hiphop and triphop to nuskool breaks and jungle.

the label was launched in april 2000 with k&s's debut album 'acid ™ made me do it'- the ultimate diy album, put together on a pentium 1 pc and old yamaha sampler with samples downloaded from the internet.

more

since then, the duo have been way too busy to release anything else themselves - mixing and mastering almost every release on the label, touring europe and africa, running the label, and producing a huge volume of productions for tv ads and cinema.

since 2000, the original dopeheadz have incorporated vj inka into the team, and have developed a live show based around dj, sampler and visuals, with guest vocalists and musicians. they're working on new multimedia formats, new forms fusing electronic and live music with visuals...

KALAHARI SURFERS

Kalahari Surfers is a name that's been synonymous with cutting edge SA music since the early 80s, when their politically charged experiments in loop-based protest music incurred the wrath of the apartheid governmeent who banned 3 albums outright!

Only Warrick Sony remains of the original Surfers, and in the meantime he's established a massive reputation as film scorer, sound designer, african music dj, album producer and collaborater with the likes of Massive Attack, MELT 2000 and Greg Hunter (the orb).

It's hard to find a music personality in SA with the wealth of experience in the music industry (and anecdotes about it!) as Warrick Sony.

more

With the arrival of African Dope on the scene in the early 2000's, Warrick produced the first new Kalahari Surfers album in over a decade AKASIC RECORD - a melting pot of dub, tribal rhythms and influences, live asian and african instrumentation and sample mayhem that can only be descibed as futureafro. The album has firmly re-established the Surfers as a dangerous new musical influence on a wholly new generation.

Since the album's release in late 2000, Warrick has toured Europe, and moved studios to the pretigious Milestone complex in CT city centre, where he has recently finished production on a new Kalahari Surfers album MUTI MEDIA, due out on African Dope in December 2003.

RED LION

Red Lion is cape town's toaster-master;
a ragga/dancehall mc with speed, harmony and lyrical prowess, plus that special ability to rouse both mind and body out of their slumber with the passion of his delivery.

He features on 2 tracks on the CAPE OF GOOD DOPE compilation - on RISE UP, produced by Grenville Williams and also featuring GODESSA frontwoman EJ VON LYRIK and percussionist/toaster AMON CHINA, and on LIONS OF ZION's 'iternal fire'. He is currently collaborating with DJ DOPE and the CHRONIC CLAN on the much anticipated Raggadub compilation due for release in october 03, and hosting african dope's DOPE NITE OUT events.

REAL ESTATE AGENTS

THE REAL ESTATE AGENTS want to sell you a dodgy house, so dodgy it's not house at all - it's brokenbeat glitchkwaito from another planet, and the lowslung funk sound that's been the discovery of Cape Town summer 2003. THE REAL ESTATE AGENTS are comprised of CONSTRUCTUS CORPORATION collaborators SIBOT and MARKUS WORMSTORM. They perform live on Final Scratch turntables, sampler and cdj's - a comedy-sampleheavy dancefloor mush-up of ingenious hiphop, electronica and squelchy phat dub beats.

SIBOT

MARKUS WORMSTORM
SIBOT

Sibot is SA 2002 'Battle of the DJs' scratch champion, and dj in Max Normal. As a solo artist he's busy developing an album while composing soundtracks for tv ads like Black Cat Peanut Butter and FFWD in SA, and licensing tracks to German tv ski ads. He's the only cat in Cape Town with a final scratch vinyl system and a laptop - meaning he can scratch up his own tunes and sounds from markus's bathroom if he likes. oh dear.

MARKUS WORMSTORM

REAL ESTATE AGENTS
MARKUS WORMSTORM

Markus Wormstorm is a classically trained beat terrorist from Pretoria whose tunes (we have over 100 in the African Dope unreleased SA library!!) are starting to pop up all over the place

- on the Constructus Corporation 'ZIGGURAT'
- on tv ads like the now banned VW 'needs to drive to get it up' ad
